What is CCS (Combined Charging System) Charging?

If you own an electric car or have an interest in electric vehicles, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about the combined charging system (CCS). The versatile and efficient solution for EV charging has been hailed as one of the significant advancements in the landscape of EVs. So, what does it mean? How does it work?

What Does CCS Mean?

Combined charging system (CCS) charging is a widely used standard for fast-charging electric vehicles (EVs). It allows EVs to be charged at DC (direct current) power levels of up to 350 kilowatts (kW), significantly faster than traditional AC (alternating current) chargers.

The CCS system combines two charging connectors in one:

  • Type 1: Used in North America, Japan, and Korea.
  • Type 2: Used in Europe and other parts of the world.

This means that a single CCS charging station can accommodate EVs with either connector type. This makes it a versatile and convenient solution for EV drivers.

How Does Combined Charging System Charging Work?

When you connect your EV to a CCS charging station, the following process occurs:

  1. The car and charger communicate to determine the appropriate charging rate and voltage.
  2. The charger sends DC power directly to the car's battery, bypassing the onboard AC charger.
  3. This allows for much faster charging times than AC charging.

Advantages of CCS Charging

CCS charging offers several advantages over other EV charging methods:

  • Fast charging times: CCS allows EVs to be charged from 0 to 80% in about 30 minutes. This option is ideal for long-distance travel.
  • Wide availability: CCS chargers are becoming increasingly available in public locations, making it easier to find charging options while on the go.
  • Standardized system: CCS is a global standard, ensuring compatibility with most EVs and charging stations.
  • Flexibility: The dual connector design allows CCS chargers to accommodate both Type 1 and Type 2 EVs.

What’s The Difference Between CCS And CHAdeMO Connectors?

Both CCS and CHAdeMO are fast charging standards for electric vehicles, but they have some key differences. Here's a breakdown:

  • Connector type

CCS: Uses either Type 1 or Type 2 connectors, depending on the region. Type 1 is used in North America, Japan, and Korea, while Type 2 is used in Europe and other parts of the world.

CHAdeMO: Uses its own unique connector.

  • Maximum power output

CCS: Can reach up to 350 kilowatts (kW), which can charge an EV from 0 to 80% in about 30 minutes.

CHAdeMO: Offers a maximum power output of 150 kW, which is still fast, but not as fast as CCS.

  • Availability

CCS: Widely available in most parts of the world, making it a more convenient option for travelers.

CHAdeMO: Primarily found in Japan and some other Asian markets.

  • Overall compatibility

CCS: More versatile due to its dual connector design, allowing it to charge both Type 1 and Type 2 EVs.

CHAdeMO: Only compatible with EVs equipped with the CHAdeMO connector.

In summary, CCS is the more widely adopted and versatile fast charging standard, offering faster charging speeds and compatibility with a wider range of EVs. However, CHAdeMO remains a viable option in certain regions and offers similar charging speeds. The best choice for you will depend on your specific needs and the availability of charging stations in your area.
