What Is A Ground Wire, And Why Is It Important?

As the name suggests, a ground wire is a safety wire that is connected to the ground below. The purpose of a ground wire is to provide a safe pathway for electricity to flow into the ground below when high voltage or irregular electrical current occurs. This wire transfers excess electrical charges into the ground in a safe and controlled manner, where the positive charges can be discharged without the risk of electrical hazards. In other words, it provides a safe place to deposit excess electrical current, rather than releasing it through your body or an appliance.

How Does Ground Wire Work?

A ground wire is designed to take the electrical current that builds up in the event of a short circuit and transfer it to the ground, where it’s safely discharged. This wire can be attached to electrical outlets, electrical devices, and the ground via a breaker box. In the event of an electrical malfunction, the ground wire will blow a fuse or trip the circuit breaker, thereby preventing electrical hazards such as electrocution and electrical fire. The ground below has negative electrical properties, so it’s able to neutralize positive electrical charges. When entering the ground below, electricity dissipates harmlessly.

Why Is Ground Wire Important?

Redirects Electrical Overload

Electrical overloads are common in any home or business. They are usually caused by lightning, damaged or exposed wiring, power outages, high-power electrical devices, and more. As the name implies, an electrical overload results in a dangerously high amount of voltage in the system. In a properly grounded electrical system, the excess electricity is safely transferred into the ground. If your electrical system is not properly grounded, an electrical overload could start a fire, cause electrocution, and damage electrical devices. A ground wire will direct excess electrical current into the ground, eliminating the risk of electrocution and appliance damage.

Stabilizes Voltage Levels

A ground wire helps to keep voltage levels balanced, thereby preventing a wide range of issues such as overloaded or blown circuits. Stable voltage levels prevent appliance damage, electrical fires, and lethal shocks. Without a ground wire, you’re risking your own safety, your family’s safety, and the health of your household appliances and electronics.
