Are Your Hallway Lights Outdated?

Do you still have the minimum standard light fixtures that were installed by the original builder of your home? Then you probably need an upgrade. If you are tired of looking at your dusty ceiling fan, brassy fixtures or yellowing glass globe lights, then consider updating your hallway lighting with sleek, sophisticated, energy saving recessed LEDs. Not only will your living space feel larger, but it will instantly bring your décor out of the 1990s and into the 21st century.

Process of Upgrading Your Hallway Lights to Modern LEDs

First, the power must be shut off at the breaker box before starting any electrical project. Double check that there is no electricity flowing to the circuits you will be working with. When you are certain that it is safe to do so, you can remove the cover from your fixture, which will expose the light bulb. After it has cooled, remove the bulb and use a putty knife or similar tool to cut around the base of the fixture. Remove screws, bolts or any other hardware that is holding the fixture in place, then lift the unit away from its location. The fixture will have wires attached, so you will need to remove the electrical connections from the back of the fixture. If you notice any damaged or burned wiring, you will need to trim it with wire cutters. Then, trace the shape of the new electrical box, and use a utility knife to cut to size if needed. Feed the wires through the new box and slide it in place. Place the nut on the hanger and tighten it down. Remove the screws from the new light fixture and install your LED recessed light. Make sure the hanger is flush with the box. Attach the wiring and secure the connector with wire nuts. Be sure to attach black to black and white to white. Insert the connector into the can lights and press into the brackets. Restore electrical power and test the fixture. If at any point you become uncomfortable handling the wiring yourself, or if the fixture does not work properly after installation is complete, then call a certified electrician. They will have the tools, experience and training needed to ensure that project is performed accurately and safely.
