Steps to Fix Loose Outlets

  • Step 1: Turn Off the Power

This should always be the first step before starting any electrical work. Locate the breaker in your breaker box that controls the circuit where the loose outlet is located. Flip the breaker to the "Off" position and confirm it's off with the voltage tester.

  • Step 2: Unscrew the Outlet from The Wall

Use the appropriate screwdriver to unscrew the outlet and gently remove it. Look for the screws holding the outlet in place, typically at the top and bottom. Carefully unscrew them and gently pull the outlet away from the wall, being mindful of any wires attached. Inspect the wires connected to the outlet. They should be tightly secured to the screws. If any wires are loose, do not proceed and consult an electrician.

  • Step 3: Add Outlet Shims

If the outlet box seems deeper than the wall surface, causing the outlet to sit loose, you can use outlet shims to add space behind the outlet and make it flush with the wall. Insert the shims behind the outlet, ensuring they don't interfere with the wires.

  • Step 4: Tighten the Outlet Screws

Firmly tighten the screws holding the outlet to the box. Don't over-tighten, as this can damage the wires or the outlet.

  • Step 5: Replace the Wall Plate

Reattach the wall plate and screw it securely back into place. Turn the power back on at the breaker box. Plug in a lamp or other appliance and turn it on to test if the outlet is working properly and secure.

Fixing a loose electrical outlet is a fairly simple task, but any kind of electrical work carries inherent risks and requires caution. If you’re unsure about any step, leave the job to a professional electrical repair service. Qualified electricians have the knowledge, training, and experience to handle electrical work safely and correctly. Moreover, they can diagnose the root cause of the loose outlet, not just treat the symptom. This helps prevent future issues and ensures a lasting solution.
