4 Signs Your Home Needs An Electrical Wiring Inspection

Your home’s wiring is an integral part of the electrical infrastructure. You want to make sure your home’s electrical wiring is in tip-top shape and up to code. Outdated or faulty wiring can become a safety hazard. That’s why it’s important to be on the lookout for signs of home wiring issues. Below are the common signs you may have a problem with your electrical wiring.

Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers

It’s not uncommon for a circuit breaker to trip when the power grid is operating at an unusually low level. Occasional tripping caused by such circumstances should not be a cause for concern. However, if circuit breakers are tripping frequently during the use of a specific appliance or outlet, contact a nearby electrician to perform a comprehensive inspection.

Dimming or Flickering Lights

If you switch on the lights and they start to flicker, you may have an electrical issue on your hands. This could be a sign of faulty wiring, a bad circuit breaker, a faulty light switch, or loose electrical connections. However, dimming or flickering doesn’t always indicate a problem. When you start large appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators, they may draw a significant amount of power, causing a momentary voltage drop. This can result in temporary dimming or flickering of lights. Once the appliance is running, the lights should return to their normal brightness. If the problem occurs every so often, then it’s time to schedule electrical repair service.

Hot Switches or Outlets

Any heat coming from your electrical switches or outlets should be a matter of concern. A warm outlet or switch may mean the circuit is carrying a load higher than its capacity. It could also be the result of loose wiring, a faulty switch or outlet, or broken infrastructure. Never ignore a switch or outlet that feels warm or hot to the touch; an electrical fire could happen faster than you realize! If you notice hot switches or outlets, turn off the power to the affected switch or outlet by flipping the corresponding circuit breaker. Then, contact a licensed and insured electrician to inspect the switch or outlet, identify the cause of the excessive heat, and carry out necessary repairs or replacements.

Burning Smell

A burning smell around electrical outlets or from the fuse box is never a good sign. Some of the possible causes of a burning smell include an overloaded circuit, faulty wiring, loose connections, or a short circuit. If you detect a burning smell, such as burnt plastic, turn off all the electrical appliances in your home and stop using the electrical outlets in that area. If the smell is coming from a fuse box, turn off the power supply to your entire home by flipping the main circuit breaker. This will cut off electricity to all the circuits in your house. Call a trusted electrical repair service and have your wiring inspected. A burning smell is a warning sign that there’s a possible electrical problem that needs to be addressed.
