There are far too many people who confuse a ceiling fan installation with the simplicity of changing a lightbulb. As it turns out, installing or replacing a ceiling fan is a lot more difficult, and risky, then meets the eye.
A ceiling fan includes electrical wiring, a motor, moving blades, mounting hardware, a light fixture or two, and more. Every part needs to work together, and even a small mistake can create more than an annoying wobble or noisy motor… It can create an electrical hazard, damage your ceiling, or even cause a fire.
While a DIY installation might save you a few bucks in the short-term, it can cost you many times more in the long-run. Plus, a professional ceiling fan replacement or installation is quick and affordable thanks to the pros at Mr. Electric.
Call or message Mr. Electric to schedule a convenient appointment today. Our live representatives are on standby to arrange urgent electrical repair, too.
A ceiling fan weighs much more than a typical light fixture, and that extra weight poses an important question: Can your ceiling support it?
A typical electrical box may work perfectly for a light fixture but not a ceiling fan. If you attach a fan to the wrong box, the constant movement can loosen the hardware over time. Don’t brush off the wobbling or rattling. In a serious case, the fan can pull against the ceiling and come crashing down.
A fan-rated electrical box provides the support the fixture needs. If you cannot confirm that your existing box can support a fan, call an electrician before you start.
A ceiling fan needs more than physical support… you also need to connect the electrical wiring correctly.
Many fans include multiple wires for the motor, light, neutral connection, and grounding. Your existing wiring may not match the fan's setup or the controls you want to use.
It’s not just connecting the wrong wires that can create a short circuit or other electrical problem. A loose wire can also create resistance and heat. Over time, that heat can damage insulation and surrounding components.
If you find unfamiliar wiring, damaged insulation, or an electrical box that does not look right, stop and call for professional electrical repair.
Flipping the wall switch does not necessarily remove power from every wire in the ceiling box. Depending on the wiring configuration, energized conductors may still be inside the box.
You need to shut off the respective circuit breaker before working on the wiring and use an appropriate tester to make sure that the circuit has no power.
Do not open or work inside the panel simply because you want to install a fan. If you do not know which breaker controls the circuit or how to verify that the wiring has no voltage, then bring in a certified electrician in Tomball, TX.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your home yourself, but electrical projects like a ceiling fan replacement require a different level of caution. It’s wise to bring in a professional if you run into:
